Wee, sleekit, cow’rin, tim’rous beastie,
O, what a panic’s in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi’ bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an’ chase thee,
Wi’ murd’ring pattle!
~ Robert Burns
Today, 25 January, is the 253rd birthday of Scotland’s well known poet, Robert Burns. Many people celebrate the Saturday before with elaborate suppers featuring the also famous haggis (Yum! No, really!). We celebrated with our Scots friends at a fund-raising dinner for the Tacoma Scots Pipe Band. Tartan, bagpiping, highland dancing, and lots of fun.
Tonight, Burns’ actual birthday, we’ll be celebrating at a new gourmet event in Seattle at one of Chef Tom Douglas’ restaurant. I am so looking forward to his take on neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes), an aw’ that!
